Dr. Ellen Smith to become Medical Director for Emergency Medical Services for Horseracing in Maryland!

On Jan 1, 2016, EMA’s Dr. Ellen L. Smith, EMA’s System-wide Director of Sports Medicine, becomes the medical director of the Emergency Medical Services for Professional Horseracing in Maryland. 

Laurel Raceway and Pimlico Race Track, famous for the Preakness Stakes, are the two sites for racing and they have their own EMS units. Uniquely, these units trail many of the mounted the races by ¼ mile in order to be immediately on scene in the event of injury.

Starting in January, Dr. Smith brings her combination of Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine knowledge and experience to become the director of this unit.
