CaST Protocol: Concussion assessment Surveillance and Treatment Protocol

Ellen L. Smith, MD EMA’s system wide director of Sports Medicine proposed a novel protocol for surveillance of subclinical concussion from a subthreshold injury.  This protocol calls for a neurological physical therapy evaluation for post-concussion symptoms that may otherwise be underreported.  An accumulation of subthreshold contacts is proposed to be cumulative and potentially worsen the outcome for players of contact sports regarding cognition, vestibular precision and physical symptoms of post-concussion syndrome.   While this proposal discusses the NFL, arguably the group with the best resources to pilot such a protocol, one could argue that perhaps it is even more imperative to have such a protocol in youth sports.   See the full article on linkedin’s  pulse, or  on Dr. Smith’s profile page
