September 12 and 13th was the third offering of the Medical School Elective Class, September 12 and 13th was the third offering of the Medical School Elective Class, Wilderness Medicine Field Course.  This course developed and taught by Dr. Ellen Smith of EMA’s MedSTar Montgomery Medical Center gives MS I-IV an opportunity to take a out of the hospital medical class.  Dr Smith is an Associate Professor of Surgery for the Medical College of Virginia.  35 students participated in the class learning wilderness baby delivery, emergency surgical airway, navigation, emergency patient transport, vertical rescue systems, emergency suturing, chest tubes and a host of other wilderness medicine emergency skills.  The students had a cool and wet day Saturday and a hot and dry day Sunday with a camp out Saturday night creating a need to manage food, fluids, supplies and homeostasis.
