Hero of ACEP

The American College of Emergency Medicine (ACEP) announced it has recognized Joseph A. Zurlo, M.D., F.A.C.E.P. , Vice-President [of Administration] of Emergency Medicine Associates, as a “Hero of Emergency Medicine.” The campaign, which is part of ACEP’s 40th  anniversary, recognizes emergency physicians who have made significant contributions to Emergency Medicine, their communities and their patients.  “Emergency physicians are on the font lines of America’s health care system, providing the essential community services of emergency care,” says ACEP President Linda L. Lawrence, M.D. “The dedication, passion and commitment Dr. Zurlo has shown embodies the vision of ACEP’s founders and the ideals of our specialty.”

A graduate of West Point and a Vietnam War veteran, Dr. Zurlo worked with founding fathers of emergency medicine, Drs. Mills, Rapp and McDade. He has been an exemplary leader in the emergency medicine department at Prince William Hospital, where he is involved in practice development, EMS and administration.  Dr. Zurlo’s stature in the medical community is such that he has been elected as President of the Medical Staff at Prince William Hospital. He represents the best that emergency medicine has to offer and is a role model for all emergency medicine physicians as the specialty progresses and matures.

Dr Jillson is Named Carroll Hospital Center’s Physician of the Month (April 2008)

A visit to the Emergency Room is always an anxious time for patients and their families. The uncertainty of the serious illness or injury can be overwhelming for all those involved. But, when a patient receives outstanding care and understanding from their Emergency Physician, it can make a worrisome experience much easier for a patient to handle.  And, thanks to the speedy response of Christopher Jillson, M.D., that was the experience of many patients during an extremely busy shift. A member of the Emergency Department (ED) staff  nominated Dr. Jillson for going "over and above" his normal duties on a day when the ED was experiencing a higher than normal volume of patients.

As always, Dr. Jillson did whatever he could to make sure all the patients were cared for as quickly as possible. He treated them with respect and compassion as he took time to thoroughly explain their care while answering all their questions.  “Dr. Jillson is consistently willing to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever there is a need, and his efforts to make sure patients receive the proper care they need in as timely a manner as possible are exemplary,”  said Kevin Smothers, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., Chief Medical  Officer, Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs.
